Quote of the Week:

Continuing with the theme for the month (KINDNESS), the quote for the week is:

"Sticks and stones may break our
bones, but words will break out
hearts"
-Robert Fulghum

My challenge for the students is for them to reflect on ways they can choose to be more kind to those around them. They can reflect (as will I) on how we can express ourselves in a manner that will only uplift those around us as opposed to belittling, criticizing or demeaning others.

Yet another reason I'm proud to be a Longhorn...

While there are many reasons why I feel proud to be a Longhorn and in some small way a part of this community, I was reminded again last night as to how lucky I am to work in Meeteetse. I left work a little after 5:00. It was extremely cold and dusk was setting in. Not two seconds after I passed Lucille's Cafe I realized I had a flat tire. Now, I might know many things, (wink, wink) but automobiles and car maintenance are not part of my knowledge repertoire. I instantly knew I would be okay because Meeteetse is filled with so many great people. I called Mrs. Potas and without hesitation she said, "Mike will be there in a minute!". Sure enough, her husband (whom I'd only really met on one occasion almost a year ago) saved me! I know he was freezing. I know he had probably JUST walked in the door. Still, I know his act of kindness is just an example of the kind of person he is as well as the kind of person this community helped him become.

Thank you Meeteetse for taking care of me!

Virtue of the Month: Kindness

Each month I choose a theme for our class. In months past we have discussed gratitude, perseverance and responsibility. Within each month I have a quote of the week that I pass out and discuss with my students. Oftentimes I will issue a non-obligatory challenge that is related to the quote. This month we are discussing kindness. The quote for the week is from Mark Twain. He said, "I can live for two months on one good compliment". I think this is a great quote because it is so true. It is amazing how one good accolade can carry us through a lot of self doubt and frustration. On the other side, one mean remark can ring in my ears for much longer than two months. It is amazing how our decision to either be kind or not can weigh out so much longer than the few seconds it takes to state our message. Let's all be a little kinder. Let's all be a little quicker to compliment someone on a job well done. Let's all be a little slower to criticize and complain. I know that if we do this, kindness will prevail and life will be just that much sweeter.
